Exhibition text
Responding to their tendency to work in series, or to return to particular themes, this exhibition is organised around three groups of videos made by Holly White between 2014 and 2019.
Shadowed by the ongoing housing crisis, The Estate Agent (2014), Thinking About Our New Flat (2016), and Fizzies The Sequel (a collaboration with Morag Keil) (2019) take a screwball look at the themes of housing, domesticity, and rentier capitalism through a range of genre lenses, including dystopian sci-fi and guerilla filmmaking.
Supermarket Cafe (2014-2016) is a three-part series shot on location at a Sainsbury’s superstore in Denmark Hill, South London. In these videos we follow ‘Holly’ and ‘Lyndon’ as they negotiate a messy agreement that consigns them to different areas of the store – Lyndon getting the supermarket itself, Holly the adjoining cafe. Will this arrangement work? And how will the discovery of a time-travel wormhole in the gluten free aisle impact their agreement?
In 2016 White briefly moved to Berlin. Finding it hard to make work in a new and unfamiliar city, they started videoing chocolate bar reviews. All ten episodes from Mystery Chocolate Taste Test (2017), and the follow up series, Ritter Sport News (2017), will be shown in full.
These works will be presented alongside further videos by White, new textile works, older sculptures, and a collection of publications made with different collaborators over the past 15 years.
Holly White: Videos is curated by Paul Pieroni, in collaboration with Holly White and David Dale Gallery.
